Family Affair

The TTC Group Midland Hillclimb Championship and Avon BMTR Top Ten Challenge moved to Shelsley Walsh in Worcestershire this weekend for the second round of the 2012 championship.

Lynn and Steve Owen had an excellent weekend with their own car and as did their customer cars across the single seater classes.

Class I saw Simon Andrews in the OMS 2000M he shares with Bernard Kevill put in a storming 28.93 seconds placing him 4th in class. This was Simons' fastest run of the weekend and a superb time in a small capacity car on a power hill. Clive Austin set a personal best sub 30 second time of 29.93 in his 2000M just 1/10th behind Richard Summers best time of 29.83 seconds in the family OMS CF1100.

Lynn & Steve's 1600cc OMS 25 has undergone further development during the winter & came straight out of the box in class winning form. During morning timed runs Steve was straight into the 26's and Lynn on a 28.08 that placed them 1st and 4th in class at lunch break, with Steve qualifying the family car for the morning run offs and finishing in 4th place. Their afternoon runs were even quicker with Steve holding onto the class win from a determined James Blackmore in his OMS 25. Lynn set a personal best time of 27.60 seconds in the afternoon that not only maintained 4th in class, but was quick enough to qualify her for the Top ten run off along with Steve, James & Trevor Willis in the afternoon.

Fellow OMS 25 drivers Neville Rollasson and James Blackmore finished 2nd and 3rd in class, Craig Bates 6th and OMS Hornet driver Tina Hawkes rounded out the OMS drivers in Class J in 8th position.

Trevor Willis in the V8 OMS 25 was on top form all weekend, running a class winning 24.19 seconds on his morning timed run and was top qualifier for both Avon BMTR Top Ten run offs.

Four OMS cars qualified in each run off with Trevor heading the pack on both occassions. His final run of the day saw him dip into the 23's with a 23.85 the only driver all day to break the 24 second barrier. This time also took Fastest Time of day.

The afternoon Top Ten saw a unique occurance when two husband and wife combinations both competed for the run off, possibly the first time this has happened at Shelsley Walsh or at any other British Hillclimb venue? Lynn & Steve were joined by Deryk & Sue Young in their 4.0 litre Gould GR51. Lynn was first on the hill followed by Sue who had qualified in 26.73 seconds. Lynn had a moment at Crossing bend hitting the earth banking hard with both nearside wheels, the commentary paused momentarily while she collected the car. With no damage she continued to the finish & still managed to set a time of 28.62 seconds leaving her just out of a point scoring position in 11th place. Sue made no mistakes on her run climbing in 26.11 and taking 4th place overall.

A new car on the hills was the beautifully presented 5.0 litre Lola T140 owned by the Summers family & driven today by Alex Summers. Painted in the same livery as the OMS 25 of James Blackmore by fellow competitor & proprietor of Classic Affairs classic & race car paintwork specialists Neville Rollasson, the cars were photographed together in the paddock.
